Burberry appeals right to signature check pattern

Image

British luxury fashion house Burberry, is in danger of losing its rights to signature check pattern. Burberry has appealed against a decision by Chinese authorities to cancel trademark protection for the British trenchcoat maker’s distinctive tartan pattern. The  Chinese authorities say the company’s trademark has expired because they haven’t used the pattern for three years in China. China is one of Burberry’s top markets. Meanwhile back in August 2012, WWD reported that the Trademark Office received a complaint which challenged Burberry’s right to the check for leather goods in China. The complaint was supposedly brought about by a division of the Lubida factory, an organization which Burberry had previously sued for creating counterfeit bags. Hmm, smells fishy because there definitely is a fish here.

This is heartbreaking! What would become of this brand that has built its empire around their signature pattern? A new trademark? This British luxury fashion house would not be the same.
